Xinjiang's Lakes: Shimmering Jewels Across Mountains and Deserts

Scattered across the sweeping landscapes of Xinjiang, more than 130 lakes (湖泊) reflect a region shaped by both powerful geological forces and the gentle seasons of time. These waters—vast, varied, and full of mystery (神秘)—are the soul of the land, lying among snow-capped mountains, endless grasslands, deep valleys, and even deserts that shimmer with heat and silence.

From the legendary Karakul Lake (喀拉库里湖) on the Pamir Plateau, the so-called “Father of Glaciers” at the foot of Muztagh Ata, to the immense Bosten Lake (博斯腾湖)—China’s largest inland freshwater lake, each lake has its own story. Karakul is a high-altitude glacial lake (冰川湖), dazzling at 3,600 meters above sea level, its waters reflecting the peaks like a mirror held up to the sky.

Bosten Lake, meanwhile, sits quietly in the Yanqi Basin to the south of the Tianshan Mountains. Formed by ancient faults (断层), it offers pure freshwater that nourishes cotton fields, reeds, and fishing villages along its shores. The scale is staggering—measuring 55 kilometers from east to west and covering over 1,100 square kilometers. Here, in the heart of the steppe, reeds whisper in the wind and migratory birds find their sanctuary.

For something truly unique, journey to Ayding Lake (艾丁湖) in the Turpan Basin’s southern reaches. This salt lake (盐湖), formed in a tectonic depression (洼地/陷落), is China’s lowest point at minus 154 meters below sea level. Though the water’s surface area has shrunk, it remains shrouded in an almost otherworldly stillness—remnants of a world sunken beneath time.

Then there’s Akesai Lake (阿克萨依湖), perched at a breathtaking 4,963 meters, aptly named the “Suspended Lake.” Up here, the wind is sharp and silence reigns, broken only by the occasional cry of a mountain bird.

No journey through Xinjiang’s waters is complete without experiencing Sayram Lake (赛里木湖), nestled in the northern Tianshan mountains. Known as the “Last Tear of the Atlantic,” this highland fault lake glistens in shades of turquoise and sapphire, ripples gliding across its 455 square kilometers of unspoiled surface.

Whether it’s walking along boardwalks that curve above translucent shallows, riding horses by vast reed beds, or sharing stories with local Kazakh herders, Xinjiang’s lakes offer not just scenery, but a deep and enduring connection to earth, water, and sky. Visiting from June to September provides the best weather and the richest colors.

With each changing season, these jewels (明珠) of the wild reflect a different side of Xinjiang—sometimes gentle and serene, sometimes bold and untamed, always waiting to be explored.
