The Color You Love Says More Than You Think

I have always been drawn to blue. Not the bright kind. The quiet blue of a cloudy sky before rain, or a deep lake on a windless afternoon.

My friend loves yellow. She paints her kitchen walls with it and wears a mustard scarf even in winter. “It makes me feel full of energy.” Her eyes lit up when she said it.

I used to think this was just a personal preference. But psychologists say this is something that is already determined the moment we are born. We don’t choose our favorite color as we grow up. The color chooses us.

Those who love warm colors — yellow, orange, red — tend to be optimists. They speak first at meetings and laugh loudly. They are not afraid to be seen.

Those who prefer cool colors — blue, green, gray — are often quieter. They listen more than they talk. They don’t fight for the spotlight. They don’t push to the front.

I’m not sure about putting people in boxes. But I do believe colors have a quiet power over us.

Take a bridge in London. It used to be painted black, and for some reason, more people jumped from it than any other bridge in the area. Then it was repainted green. The number of incidents dropped sharply.

A yellow room makes people feel more cheerful than a dark green one. A red dress can warm a gloomy winter day. And in factories with bright machines, workers make fewer mistakes and feel better.

I think of this when I dress in the morning. On days I feel small, I reach for something warm — a soft pink sweater, an orange scarf. It doesn’t solve anything. But it helps. A little.

Maybe colors don’t change who we are. But they remind us of who we want to be.

And sometimes, that is enough.
