Cold Food Festival: 2,600 Years of Eating Cold

There is a festival where no fire is allowed in any household.

No hot meals. No hot soup. Not even a cup of warm tea. Just cold food — but there's a story behind it.

Over 2,600 years ago, a loyal official named Jie Zitui cut flesh from his own leg to save his starving prince. When the prince became king, Jie asked for nothing and hid in the mountains. The king set a fire to force him out. Jie died in the flames.

Filled with guilt, the king ordered: no fire on that day. Only cold food.

So what did people do on this day? Well, here's the interesting part — they ate cold porridge, qingtuan (green rice balls), and sanzi (fried dough twists). They also visited graves to honor their ancestors, or went to the countryside to play on swings and plant willow branches. Not dull at all.

Over time, Cold Food Festival merged with Qingming — just one day apart. Qingming survived. Cold Food faded.

So next time you bite into a cold qingtuan on a warm spring day, remember Jie Zitui — and the festival that's been "cool" for 2,600 years.

🥢 寒食节:一个“冷”了两千多年的节日

有这么一个节日,家家户户都不生火。

没有热饭,没有热汤,连杯热茶都喝不上。只能吃冷食——但这背后有个故事。

两千六百多年前,一个叫介子推的忠臣从自己腿上割下一块肉,救活了快要饿死的主公。后来主公成了晋文公,介子推却什么都不要,躲进了深山。晋文公放火烧山想逼他出来,介子推死在了火里。

晋文公又后悔又难过,下令这一天不许生火,只能吃冷食。

那这一天到底怎么过呢?说起来也挺有意思的——人们吃的是冷粥、青团、馓子等冷食,也会出门扫墓或者去郊外荡秋千、插柳枝,一点儿都不冷清。

后来寒食节和清明挨得太近,慢慢就合并了。清明留了下来,寒食却快被忘了。

所以,下次你在暖洋洋的春日里咬一口凉丝丝的青团,别忘了介子推——以及这个“冷”了两千多年的节日。
