What is Huazhao Festival?
Have you ever heard of a festival that celebrates the birthday of all flowers? That's Huazhao Festival — an ancient Chinese tradition that dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC).
When is it?
It usually falls on the 12th or 15th day of the second lunar month, which means late February
to mid-March on the Western calendar.
How do people celebrate?
On this day, people would tie colorful ribbons or strips of red cloth onto flowering branches. This beautiful custom is called "rewarding the blossoms" (shanghong) . They believed it would protect the flowers and bring good luck.
Women would also go for walks in the countryside — an activity we now call "spring outings" (taqing) . Some would chase butterflies, enjoy flower cakes, or simply sit under blooming trees and feel the gentle breeze.
Why does it matter?
In ancient times, Huazhao was as important as the Mid-Autumn Festival. People said: "Flower mornings and moonlit nights" — referring to Huazhao and Mid-Autumn as the two most romantic days of the year.
Sadly, this lovely festival faded away over time. But today, more and more young people in hanfu are bringing it back — tying ribbons to trees, offering tea to flower spirits, and celebrating spring the old way.
So next spring, when you see flowers blooming, why not tie a ribbon to a branch and say "Happy birthday" to the flowers? After all, spring is too beautiful not to celebrate.
