In recent years, short video apps have become very popular. Many people spend a lot of time watching video after video, hoping to find something interesting. However, new research shows that watching too many short videos — and especially switching between videos quickly — can actually make people feel more bored.

Researchers from Canada studied how people feel when they watch short videos. They asked participants to watch videos in different ways. For example, some participants could freely skip or fast-forward through the videos, while others had to watch videos all the way through. The researchers also tried letting people switch between several different short videos or just watch one longer video without switching.

The results were surprising. People who often switched between videos or skipped parts of videos actually felt more bored than those who watched videos all the way through. The greater freedom participants had to change videos, the less interested and focused they became. Instead of finding more fun, they felt less satisfied and wanted something even better.

According to the researchers, boredom is closely connected to our attention and engagement. When you keep jumping from one video to another, your brain finds it harder to focus. You expect the next video will be more entertaining, but this rarely happens. As a result, you feel a gap between what you want (to be engaged and entertained) and what you actually experience. This gap leads to feelings of boredom.

Dr. Katy Tam, the lead scientist of the study, explained that enjoyment often comes from fully immersing yourself in one thing. Just like watching a movie in the cinema, we enjoy it more when we let ourselves become absorbed in what we are watching, instead of always searching for something better.

Watching short videos nonstop is not always a good way to escape boredom. In fact, it can make us feel even less satisfied. The “fear of missing out” makes us constantly search for something better, but this can be tiring and disappointing.

If you want to avoid feeling bored, try to focus on doing one thing at a time. Whether it’s watching videos or engaging in other activities, fully immerse yourself in what you are doing, and life may seem more interesting. Jumping quickly from video to video might seem fun at first, but it can make you feel more bored and unhappy. True enjoyment often comes from focusing, not from always searching for something better.
