Believe in Yourself

I used to think that “believe in yourself” was just a comforting phrase adults said when they had nothing else to offer. In reality, self-doubt comes much more often than confidence. Every time I start something new—whether it’s a new project at work, developing a fitness habit, or simply trying to make new friends—I always worry that I’m not good enough, as if others might see right through to my lack of confidence at any moment.

There was a period when I decided to try jogging in the park near my apartment. On the first day, I barely made it 300 meters before stopping, standing by the sidewalk and catching my breath. Other people ran past with ease — fit, relaxed, and seemingly never out of breath. In that moment, I felt out of place, as if I was so different from those confident runners. For a while, I even wanted to just turn around and go home.

But for some reason, the next day I went back. I told myself, “You don’t have to be fast. You just have to show up.” The second day wasn’t much better, but over the weeks, running became less about competition and more about noticing small changes: I could breathe a little easier, my legs felt stronger, my playlist lasted longer before I turned for home.

All those tiny steps added up, and slowly, I stopped doubting whether I belonged. I started to see that “believing in yourself” doesn’t mean you never feel shaky or scared. It just means you’re willing to make room for your own small efforts, even when it feels awkward or slow.

Now, whenever I start something new, I remember the beginner’s park path. Self-belief, I’ve learned, grows not from dramatic victories, but from returning to what matters—even on days when confidence is in short supply. If you can give yourself another try, even a hesitant one, maybe that’s what truly means believing in yourself.
