Chang'e, who was deeply in love with her husband, did not want him to die. She begged the god of heaven to spare her husband's life and offered to take his place. The god of heaven agreed and granted Chang'e the Elixir of Life, which would grant her immortality.
Chang'e did not want to leave her husband and live forever without him, so she decided to drink the Elixir of Life herself. As she drank the Elixir, she felt herself growing lighter and lighter, until she was lifted off the ground and flew into the sky. She flew higher and higher, until she reached the moon.
Since then, Chang'e has lived on the moon, watching over the earth and its inhabitants. The Chinese people believe that Chang'e can grant them good fortune and blessings, and they honor her by offering sacrifices and prayers on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is held on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
