The Dragon Boat Festival (端午节), also known as Duanwu, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar. Usually falling in June, this festival is well-known for its exciting dragon boat races and delicious zongzi (粽子), which are sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves.
The festival has deep roots in Chinese history. It honors the memory of Qu Yuan (屈原), a patriotic poet from the ancient state of Chu. According to legend, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River out of love for his country. People threw rice dumplings into the river to keep fish and evil spirits away from his body, which is why eating zongzi is now a key tradition.
Dragon boat racing is a highlight of the festival. Teams paddle long, colorful boats shaped like dragons, competing to the beat of loud drums. This thrilling event not only brings communities together but also celebrates teamwork and courage.
Other customs include hanging mugwort (艾草) and calamus (菖蒲) on doors to ward off disease, and wearing fragrant sachets (香包) to protect against evil. In some areas, children have their foreheads dotted with realgar wine (雄黄酒) to keep them safe from pests and bad luck.
Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and is celebrated by Chinese people all around the world. It is a time to remember history, cherish family, and celebrate summer’s arrival.
