Major Snow (Daxue) – Welcoming the Heart of Winter
Major Snow (大雪), called Daxue, is the twenty-first solar term in the Chinese lunar calendar. It usually arrives in early December and brings much colder days across the country. In the north, the first real snowfall might cover the ground with a white blanket and lakes begin to freeze, while the south feels sharper, chilly winds.
During Daxue, the landscape changes a lot. Trees lose their last leaves, and fields become quiet. Farmers finish storing the last grains and vegetables, and people work hard to stay warm and healthy. This is a time for boosting energy and preparing for the coldest part of the year.
One special custom during Daxue is making and eating lamb soup or hot stews with family. Lamb soup is believed to warm the body and help people fight off winter illnesses. Markets are filled with root vegetables like radishes and sweet potatoes, which are perfect for soups and roasted dishes. In some places, people enjoy making their own preserved fish or sausages, hanging them outside in the cold air to dry.
On sunny days, children go outside to enjoy the crisp air and maybe play in the falling snow. Daxue is a time for families to gather indoors, share hot meals, dress in thick scarves and padded jackets, and take care of each other during the cold, peaceful days of early winter.
